I work as a head and neck cancer surgeon at CION Cancer Clinics in Ameerpet. A head and neck surgeon is the doctor who removes cancers of the mouth, tongue, throat and voice box, thyroid, and salivary glands by operating. These are the parts you use to speak, eat, swallow, and to look like yourself. So this surgery is not only about taking out the cancer, it is also about what your life looks like afterwards.

These cancers are common where we live. Tobacco, gutka, khaini, and areca nut chewing bring on a lot of the mouth and throat cancers I see. That is why I do not take early signs like a non-healing mouth ulcer or a neck lump lightly.

I do not rush a patient to the operating room. When someone comes to me, the first thing I check is whether the diagnosis is complete and whether the biopsy and scans tell us enough. Only when I know clearly where the cancer is and how far it has spread can I plan how much to remove and how to protect speech, before I ever pick up a knife.

In head and neck surgery my two goals always travel together. One is to remove the cancer fully, with a proper margin, because half-removing it only lets it come back. The other is to protect speech, swallowing, and the way the face looks as far as I can. The balance between those two is different for every patient, so I do not apply one fixed method to everyone.

When the case needs more than surgery, I work with the CION team for radiation and chemotherapy. And if anyone wants a second opinion, I welcome it.
